ABOUT MARTHA SCANLAN:
Montana singer-songwriter Martha Scanlan first gained national attention with the innovative old-time string band Reeltime Travelers on TBone Burnett’s soundtrack for Cold Mountain. Her first solo album, The West Was Burning, featuring Dirk Powell, Amy and Levon Helm, was heralded as an instant classic, one of those rare albums that defies genre and generation.
Since then she has written and recorded five more iconic albums, headlined festivals across the US and Europe, and collaborated and shared the stage with a variety of roots musicians ranging from Alison Krauss to the Decemberists.
Her song Little Bird Of Heaven was the centerpiece of celebrated American author Joyce Carol Oates novel by the same name.
While currents of deep Appalachian mountain valleys and vast Montana landscapes wind through Martha’s songs, it’s really the accessibility and intimacy that defines them, and what has earned her a loyal cult following worldwide. Her songs have been covered by Sarah Jarosz, Andrew Marlin and most recently Robert Plant.
Celebrated roots musician and producer Dirk Powell writes, “Martha feels the natural world, including that of human relations, to such an extent that the stories transcend themselves.”
She currently tours with longtime music collaborator and producer Jon Neufeld. Their 2024 album of covers, Save It For Later, was listed among the top ten by No Depression magazine. Their most recent project is a series of singles that they are releasing on streaming platforms. Martha’s song 14 Days came out in February 2026, followed by a cover of Led Zeppelin’s That’s The Way in June.
